Aer Lingus closes cabin crew base at Shannon

The airline has written to staff explaining that the base is no longer viable after it failed to secure co-operation from the IMPACT trade union to operate smaller aircraft on new transatlantic services.
Almost 90 staff are currently employed there.
Aer Lingus insists there will be no reduction to the Shannon schedule or fleet.
In a statement this afternoon, it says it is entering into a 30-day consultation period with union reps to explore the options which may be available for the affected staff.
The announcement comes on the same day that Ryanair confirmed new routes operating from Shannon airport.
