Elderly priest in hospital with fractured skull after burglary

Shane Cooney of Lismore Road, Crumlin was arrested shortly after the burglary which took place in the early hours of yesterday morning.
At around 1.30am yesterday morning, Fr. Diarmuid Byrne was confronted by an intruder in the upstairs of his home at St. Anthony's Road in Rialto.
He was pushed back into his bedroom and was subjected to a savage beating.
Gardaí responding to reports of an intruder at his home found the 61-year-old lying in a pool of blood on his bedroom floor.
He was rushed to St. James' Hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain.
He needed 26 stitches to close a wound on his head.
Shortly after the attack, gardaí arrested 23-year-old Shane Cooney for an unrelated matter at nearby Herberton Road.
Forensic tests linked him to the crime scene and he was brought before Dublin District Court this afternoon.
An application for bail is being heard before Judge Cormac Dunne as we speak.
