Leave of the High Court to serve legal proceedings was required, because Mr Drumm is living in another country.
However David Drumm is not the only person the Quinn family intends to sue.
Patricia Quinn and her five adult children are also planning to issue proceedings against several other former Anglo directors, the Central Bank and the Department of Finance.
The action relates to loans of over €2.3bn which they allege were unlawfully issued by the bank to Quinn companies in 2007 and 2008.
An application by their lawyers for permission to serve proceedings against Mr Drumm, who is now living in the United States was granted by Mr Justice Kevin Cross.
The former Anglo CEO has been given 35 days to enter an appearance which will be an indication of whether he intends to defend the case.
