In a recent article in the Irish Times - Michael D Higgins was accused of becoming increasingly political and partisan in his speeches.
President Higgins said that he knows what he can and cannot say under the Constitution - saying that the days of somebody going into enforced silence are gone.
Michael D Higgins also said that it was entirely wrong to refer to him in the article as the least bad of the bunch of candidates.
"I do think it was entirely wrong to refer to the President as the best of a bad bunch...we don't need to go there," he said.
"Certainly the idea of asking anyone to be censored or to just simply to go into some kind of enforced silence - those days are gone that is medieval thinking."
