Domestic violence service 'overstretched'

A domestic violence service had to deny help to four out of every five women that sought its help last year, because it was already full.

Almost 600 women living in abusive situations made enquiries to Sonas' Viva House refuge in 2011, but it could only accomodate 130 people.

The group has said the trend is mirrored in its longer-term housing projects.

Spokesperson Paula McGovern said women's lives are being put at risk because the service is "so overstretched".
