Public sector union leaders to discuss allowances

Union leaders representing public servants will discuss the issue of allowances at a Public Accounts Committee today.

Public sector allowances have come in for criticism as being unnecessary and outdated, and last month the Government said it had achieved only a fraction of its target savings in cutting them.

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin revealed that just one out of more than a thousand allowances paid to existing staff will be cut.

Meanwhile, more than 100 allowances being paid to current public servants will be stopped for new entrants.
