Mayo County Board warn fans about cash scam in build-up to All-Ireland

McLoughlin said: "The scam is done via telephone where fans receive a call from someone claming to be contacting them on behalf of the Mayo County Board. They are then asked if they would be in a position to contribute financially to support the minor and senior teams and, if they could not do that, if they would be able to provide them with contact details of others who might be able to do so.
"This ploy first came to our attention last year before the semi-final. We sent out a release then but it was all forgotten. We believe that the people responsible, who are Irish, are the same group who have been making the calls in the last couple of weeks. I don't know if this sort of thing has happened in other counties but we have found it a huge issue when we get to the latter stages of the championship."
McLoughlin advised anybody with doubts or concerns about fundraising activities relating to county teams to contact the board.
"Supporters should be aware that the only funds raised that go towards our team training funds are those raised under our Cáirde Mhaigheo fundraising umbrella and only authorised by the executive of Mayo County Board."
