The collision occurred at about 6.40am on the northbound carriageway of the N11 at the Ashford/ Rathnew exit.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, they discovered seven cars strewn across the road and on the embankment of a slipway.
Gardaí believe there was an initial accident which led the man to get out of his car and he was then struck by another vehicle.
The victim's body was taken to Loughlinstown Hospital in Dublin.
The N11 was closed northbound to allow Garda forensic experts to examine the crash scene.
The road reopened several hours later.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have been on the N11 at the time to contact Wicklow Garda Station at (0404) 60140.
Meanwhile, a woman in her 50s died and a male pedestrian was injured when a car ploughed into them close to a Luas stop in Dublin city centre yesterday. The accident happened at Abbey St Upper shortly before 1pm.
It is believed the man suffered leg injuries which are not life-threatening.
Both pedestrians were taken to the Mater Hospital, where the woman was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the car - a small grey Hyundai - was arrested at the scene.
The man, aged in his 30s, is being held under the Road Traffic Act at Store St Garda station.
Luas services into the city centre were disrupted as a result.
A Garda spokesman said the area was sealed off "to facilitate a forensic collision investigation of the scene".
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Store St Garda station at (01) 6666600.
