And it had the desired result as far as he was concerned - Cork County Council immediately carried out road surface repairs.
Liam Keane, 21, from Kanturk, went into action after a friend of his posted a picture of the pothole on Facebook.
"One of my friends, Johnny Foley from Liscarroll, posted the picture of a council cone sinking in the hole. A few days later myself and my girlfriend Stephanie Cronin went out to see the hole, which was on a road close to the village of Lismire," he said.
Liam, who is 6ft 4in, decided to put a stick into the hole to measure it, before stripping down to his swimming togs and taking the plunge.
His exploits were filmed by Stephanie.
"I sat down in it, so it came up to my neck. It was fairly cold," Liam said.
The video was taken on Dec 30 but within 24 hours a Cork County Council crew had filled it in.
The problem, according to a county council spokesman, was that it wasn't an ordinary pothole.
It had been caused by a burst water main which had eaten away a large chunk of the road surface.
"We fixed it as soon as we were notified," the spokesman added.
Liam said he shuddered to think what could have happened if an unsuspecting motorist had hit the hole.
"If a car had hit it, it would certainly have caused serious damage. If it was a motorcyclist they could have been killed," Liam said.
He believes the pothole had been on the road for at least a week.
And the plucky young man has vowed to make a splash in other major potholes in an effort to have them filled in as well. "I'll do it again if I come across something similar," he said.
"The reaction to the video has been phenomenal.
"People living in Australia, America, and all over the world have seen it. Hopefully I've made a few people laugh," Liam added.
