The significant retail signing will leave the developers of the mixed-use €50m City Gate Park, John Cleary Developments, well-placed as they await other office and retail tenants, with several expected to sign up early in the New Year and discussions well advanced with others. City Gate Park has scope for up to 1,500 jobs, and only went on site 18 months ago.
DFS has 84 stores in Britain, recently opened in Blanchardstown in Dublin, and has a presence in Belfast. It had been looking for a suitable Cork building for some time.
Paying rent of about €400,000 a year, DFS is taking 20,000 sq ft at ground level in the largest of the new buildings at City Gate Park, where construction by BAM is ending.
The high-quality scheme, Cleary's second at Mahon, has 200,000 sq ft of offices overhead, with sizeable deals pending, as well as an 18 metre swimming pool and leisure/fitness class centre, with an operator due to commence fit-out in 2013.
DFS, meanwhile, is to start its €1.5m fit-out next week, and aims to be open by mid-December.
City Gate Park is close to the south ring road and Jack Lynch Tunnel, by the access points to Mahon Point Shopping Centre, Mahon Point Retail Park, and Johnson and Perrott motor dealers, making for a very strong retail hub.
