He was sent to a nearby jail after the closed hearing. Court officials said they expect to receive details of an extradition request within the next few days from the Central Criminal Court in Madrid.
The detainee - named as Sean Heiss - is wanted for questioning by English detectives over the murder of his mother, Margaret Sheehy, 58, who was found dead at her home in Kingston, London, on Jun 12.
Ms Sheehy, a former financial services worker originally from Ireland, had lived in London for some years.
The Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional Catalan police, named the man as Sean H but confirmed he was wanted for questioning over his mother's death and was travelling on an Irish passport.
He was detained in Barcelona's Eixample district after an unnamed woman was stabbed to death near an ATM at about 7am on Saturday.
A Barcelona courts spokesman said: "Sean H, the man arrested on suspicion of killing a woman this weekend in Barcelona, has been remanded in prison.
"Another court which was operating as the duty court the day of the murder, will now deal with the extradition issue if Madrid's Central Criminal Court authorises it."
