One dead after shooting at US base

One person is dead after a shooting at Marine Base Quantico in the US, and the authorities are in a stand-off with the suspect, who has barricaded himself in the barracks.

The base was put on lockdown, military spokesman Lieutenant Agustin Solivan said.

"It's still a stand-off situation," he said.

He said they believe the suspect, whose name was not released, is a staff member at the officer candidate school at the base.

No information on the victim was immediately released.

The base is in the Virginia suburbs near Washington, D.C.

A base spokesman said the suspect has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound along with a second victim.

Lt Solivan said authorities entered the barracks early today where the suspect had barricaded himself after the fatal shooting and found him dead along with another victim.

No names have been released, but Lt Solivan said they believe the suspect was a staff member at the officer candidate school at the base. He said the two others killed were also marines.

The base had been put on lockdown but that has been lifted.
