The bank, which provided around 40% of all mortgages in Ireland last year, said that the €1bn figure refers to new loans drawn down.
Almost 90% of the mortgage draw-downs were to customers buying their first home or moving to a new home.
Bank of Ireland said that the average first-time buyer mortgage with them in 2012 was for €153,000, while the average age of first-time buyers was 32.
