Jens Weidmann is said to have threatened to quit in protest at Mario Draghi's plans to resume a bond-buying programme to assist the troubled peripheral nations.
This would help bring down borrowing costs of crisis hit countries.
The Bundesbank has declined to comment on the reports.
Weidmann's predecessor Axel Weber quit over the programme, as did the ECB's former chief economist Juergen Stark.
