As gardaí begin their October Bank Holiday road safety campaign, they have warned that almost 140,000 people have been fined for speeding on Irish roads.
Some 153 people have been killed on our roads so far this year, a rise of 13 compared to the same period in 2012.
"Well, there would be a 24-hour operation which is an integral part of a two-week operation of high visibility and checkpoints and very proactive roads policing," said Chief Superintendent Michael O'Sullivan from the National Traffic Bureau.
"In particular, 7am till 7am the following morning, it will be an intensified campaign in an effort to try to get people to slow down."
