Health Minister James Reilly has admitted that he struggles with his own weight.
He made the comments when launching a major new public health campaign to tackle childhood obesity.
"I'm not happy with the profundity of my rotundity," he quipped. "So it's an area I've had a long, long interest in for obvious reasons, and one that I continue to struggle with myself.
"But I'll keep struggling, and I'd like to everybody to be aware of the fact that it's not just something that 'you're well padded for the winter' - it does have an impact on your health status."
Figures show that one in four children in Ireland are now classed as overweight or obese and at increased risk of health problems.
Parents are being urged to give smaller portions, less treat foods, replace sugary drinks and encourage more physical activity.
