Internet download speeds are measured in Mbps - megabits per second - and indicate the maximum possible download speed over the network. Individual homes' speed will vary slightly.
UPC's network upgrade will apply to the entry-level package it offers of internet, TV and phone in its "Horizon" bundle, as well as its broadband-and-phone only bundle.
Higher-level users who already have one of UPC's fastest offerings will see their lines upgraded from 150Mb to 200Mb.
Eircom, one of the company's main competitors, currently offers broadband packages with a download speed limit of either 50Mb or 70Mb.
"Coming on the back of the recent success of our Horizon TV launch, this move further positions UPC as the only player to provide extraordinary services across its entire product range and redefines the minimum acceptable broadband speed in the Irish market," said Mark Coan, the company's VP of Sales and Marketing in Ireland.
"In a nutshell, the faster your broadband speed, the more you'll be able to do online. So if there are a few of you at home gaming, downloading, streaming movies and shopping, then mega speeds of up to 200Mb will let you all do your thing at the same time."
