Leo Sharp told a judge that the drug conspiracy was the only crime he has ever committed and said he did it for the money.
Sharp was not reluctant to speak as he appeared in front of Detroit federal judge Nancy Edmunds. His lawyer repeatedly reminded him to limit his remarks to the judge's questions.
Sharp, from Michigan City, was 87 in 2011 when a Michigan trooper stopped him on Interstate 94, west of Detroit.
He had more than 200 pounds of cocaine, although it was not his first drug shipment.
Prosecutors have agreed to recommend a five-year prison sentence, noting Sharp's age and service in the Second World War.
