Crime victims to gain additional rights under EU law

The move is one of a series of rights being afforded to victims under a new EU directive.
A guide to the new rights is being launched in Dublin this morning, which sets out best practice for dealing with victims of crime.
Mark Kelly, Director of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, said the directive will provide greater support service, but will also mean an investment in courts facilities around the country.
"[We need] sensible things, like provision for separate waiting rooms, perhaps separate entrances - so that's going to mean that we have to look, outside Dublin in particular, at some of the very old court services buildings and old courtrooms, and ask ourselves: do these facilities actually appropriately protect victims?
