Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy Jerry Buttimer said the introduction of calorie counting in the Dáil restaurant will enable TDs, Senators and Leinster House staff to make more informed decisions about what they are eating.
Deputy Buttimer said it is no secret that the life of a public representative can lead to unhealthy dietary choices which lead to unwanted weight gain.
He also said more TDs should use the Dáil gym.
"There will be quite a considerable staff and members would use it and I would encourage more members to use it," he said.
"It is important that we promote public health and It is important that we promote exercise and lifestyle balance and that's what this is about it is not a frivolous matter."
