The remains were discovered by a walker on Kilakee Mountain in Dublin.
Investigating officers now believe the woman died much more recently than originally thought.
According to The Irish Times, Gardaí have contacted the families of a small number of women who went missing in the last two to three years.
"I believe that a post mortem was completed yesterday evening, and a cause of death hasn't been formally established yet," said Alan Bailey, a retired detective with the Cold Case Unit.
"We believe the DNA tests to identify the corpse haven't been completed yet, and won't be, I think, for another day or two.
"They will spend the next few days … on a fingertip search of the area, just to see if there's any evidence."
A fingertip search is, as it suggests, a detailed search made by passing the fingertips over a crime scene.
"It will be a painstaking search," Bailey said.
