The 28-year-old was attacked by four men at 5.40pm on Monday as he stood under the Crann an Oir monument on Dame Street, Dublin.
The victim, who was known to gardaí, suffered serious stab wounds to his stomach and cheek and was rushed to St James' Hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Four males - ranging from their teens to early 20s - set upon the victim, who had to be hospitalised for stab wounds to the stomach and cheek.
Anyone who saw his attackers flee through Temple Bar is asked to get in touch with gardai at Pearse Street.
Dublin City Councillor Mannix Flynn said this type of 'appalling incident' needs to be addressed.
"This is one of many of these types of incidents that takes place in the city, and they are all too often, and they are all too frequent," Cllr Flynn said.
"We need extra gardaí in the city centre, we need to be able to deal with the issues in relation to people carrying knives, and the issue of street violence."
