However, in 30% of crashes that resulted in the death of a child, no seatbelt or restraint was used.
The Road Safety Authority has released new data revealing that between 1997 and 2012, 262 young people lost their lives on the roads.
So far this year four young people have died.
The RSA is urging people, as the new school year starts, to make sure their journey to school is a safe one.
