Taoiseach plays down latest opinion poll findings

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has today played down the findings of a new opinion poll which shows that Fianna Fáil is the most popular party in the country.

Speaking in New York, Deputy Kenny said the poll would not distract the Government from implementing its plan to bring about economic recovery.

The Sunday Independent Poll puts Fine Gael in second place, four points behind Fianna Fáil.

Support for the Labour Party has dropped back to 9%.

Deputy Kenny said that he understands the hardship that is being inflicted on people, but he says being popular is less important than doing what is right.

The Taoiseach said the poll will not distract the Government from its goal of fixing the economy.
