EU to seek 'common position' on Syria during Dublin talks

The EU is to seek "a common position" at talks in Dublin next week on whether to lift an arms embargo to supply weapons to the Syrian opposition.

EU leaders meeting in Brussels discussed calls from Britain and France to abandon the embargo.

Both London and Paris warned they were ready to break ranks with their EU partners to supply weapons to the rebels.

However there's concern among other governments that such a move could escalate the conflict.

The European Union president Herman Van Rompuy said it was agreed that foreign ministers would assess the situation as a matter of priority at the Dublin talks.
