Grocers call for levy on supermarkets outside towns

Small grocery operators are calling for a levy on shops and supermarkets operating outside town centres.

It follows a report by the sector's representative group - RGDATA - called 'Nightmare on Every Street' which looked at 16 towns and villages around the country.

The group has told an Oireachtas Committee that a national policy in this area is needed.

Director General Tara Buckley said that if people are charged for parking in town centres, this cost should apply outside towns also.
