Shamseddin Gaida spent his summer holidays in Libya and was due to fly back to Ireland in August, but it is understood he travelled instead to Syria to join rebel forces.
The 16-year-old boy's family moved from Libya to Co Meath two years ago where they run a grocery shop.
Dr Ali Selim from the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland said the Muslim community had offered up their prayers for the Gaidan family.
He also called on the international community to help stop the war in Syria.
"What is happening in Syria is a crime. It is genocide," he said. "If we wait (a few more months), I think there will be no more Syria on the earth. The international community should act straight away and stop (this)."
