Court hears how Dublin granny foiled armed robbery

A Dublin Court has heard how an 85-year-old woman attacked an armed robber with a copy of the RTÉ Guide.

27-year-old Edward Hutton of Railway Road, Donaghmede, pleaded guilty to robbery of Mace Shopping Centre in Clontarf in October, 2012.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told that during the raid, 85-year-old customer, Dorothy Holmes, used her magazine to hit Hutton as he threatened a cashier.

Mrs Holmes' bravery was captured on CCTV stills shown to the judge, who imposed a three-year jail sentence on the accused.
