Report to highlight negative impact of austerity policies

A new report examining the human impact of austerity in the five EU countries worst affected by the economic crisis is to be published today.

The survey, commissioned by Catholic relief, development and social service organisation Caritas, focused on the experiences of people living in Ireland, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

It is expected to show high levels of poverty and deprivation as a result of austerity policies being pursued in those countries and challenges the official discourse that the worst of the crisis is over.

It comes after a CSO report yesterday showed almost a quarter of the population here experienced two or more types of enforced deprivation in 2011.
