British MPs vote in favour of legislation for gay marriage

British MPs have voted in favour of legislation for gay marriage in England and Wales.

After Prime Minister David Cameron made a last ditch appeal for support, the House of Commons backed the proposals by a big margin of 400 to 175.

However it is believed 139 conservative MPs voted against the move.

The legislation will not apply in Northern Ireland - while Scotland is drawing up its own legislation to deal with gay marriage.
