Woman awarded €100,000 in damages from HSE

A woman who became pregnant after a sterilisation operation and gave birth to a baby boy, who died after six months, has been awarded €100,000 in damages.

Karen Hurley Ahern of Assumpta Park, Newcastle West, Limerick sued her gynaecologist Victor Moore and the HSE, alleging negligence in how the procedure was carried out at Tralee General Hospital in Kerry in 2001.

Her baby's fatal illness was not related to the sterilisation procedure.

There was evidence the 39-year-old didn't want to become pregnant again because she had a blood-clotting disorder that presented risks to her and her child.

The High Court has rejected a claim for damages by her husband Garrett Ahern.
