President Michael D Higgins and the Taoiseach Enda Kenny have joined the chief mourners -Adrian Donohoe's wife Caroline, his two young children Niall and Amy and his parents Hugh and Peggy at St Joseph's Redemptorist Church.
Chief celebrant Fr Michael Cusack described Adrian Donohoe as a perfect role model and he paid tribute to the Gardaí for "laying down their lives" for the people of Ireland.
He said now was the time for reflection on the need for more policing in Ireland and made an impassioned appeal for information about the murder.
"I have absolutely no doubt that there are people who today know who has caused this dreadful sorrow," he said.
"If there's anyone who knows anything about it, if you have any semblance of goodness in you, for God's sake, turn these people in."
Detective Garda Donohoe's brother-in-law Derek told the congregation about the gifts presented at the funeral today by his family.
They included a TV remote from his daughter Amy "that she always hid from her daddy to keep control of the television" and his mobile phone, which she always rang to say goodnight when he was on duty".
