Thousands of people are attending the State funeral in Co Louth, after detective Donohoe was shot dead outside the Lordship credit union last Friday night.
The President and the Taoiseach are among those attending the 41-year-old's Requiem Mass in Dundalk.
The Primate of All-Ireland Cardinal Sean Brady is presiding over the Mass.
Chief celebrant Fr Michael Cusack said: "It's just devastating…Nobody can find words to express the depth of sorrow and shock and the horrific, horrific attack on human life.
"I was with (Adrian's widow) Caroline until 11.30 last night…They're just numb since it happened...She has to stay strong for two young children (Niall and Amy, seven and six) and get through today."
Meanwhile, it is believed the five-man gang involved in the robbery are known to Gardai.
No arrests have been made as of yet in the cross-border investigation, but it is also believed that a number of the members of the gang were known to detective Donohue.
