Barroso: Emergency phase of crisis is over

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said the time for taking emergency decisions in Europe should now be over.

Jose Manuel Barroso made the remarks after a meeting with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore at Dublin Castle.

He said the "doomsday scenario" of a break-up of the countries using the euro currency had not come to pass.

He added the crisis in Europe had now entered a new phase, where restoring confidence was the key priority.

"We are in a better situation today," he said. "We have shown the nay-sayers that we are willing to do all that is necessary to ensure the stability of the single currency."
