Colorado siege gunman shoots three dead

A gunman shot three people dead before being killed by police after a siege at a Colorado house today.

Police Sergeant Cassidee Carlson said a SWAT team was called after gunshots were heard at the house in Aurora early today.

Investigators said three victims appeared to have been killed before officers arrived.

Carlson said the suspect was shot and killed when he exchanged fire with officers.

A fifth person escaped uninjured.

Violence put Aurora in the national spotlight nearly six months ago after a gunman's shooting spree inside a Colorado cinema left 12 people dead.

Prosecutors will go to court tomorrow to outline their case against the suspect, James Holmes.
