The Saturday before Christmas was the busiest day for retail sales in more than five years, and hopes of capitalising on the post-Christmas sales saw 70% of stores open their doors on Saint Stephen's Day.
Keith Rogers, chairman of Retail Excellence Ireland, said the boost in business is still continuing.
"I think one thing that's changed this year is the way the days have fallen," he said.
"Customers, maybe because the second of January fell on a Wednesday, they decided to extend their Christmas holiday, and this year, from Wednesday up to the last two days, and we expect it to continue through the weekend, we're showing significant double-digit growth on last year."
