New cars will now be given plates to reflect which one of two annual buying periods they belong to.
It is likely to make car purchases later in the year more attractive to consumers who traditionally try and buy at the beginning of the new year.
SIMI's Alan Nolan has said, as the economy recovers, the two-period registration system will deliver for the motor industry.
Mr Nolan said: "To have our industry so front-loaded, you know if you have a bad start to the year you really have no way back, really was very unhealthy.
"It caused huge business problems for people in the amount of funding they needed in the early few months of the year.
"This is a great change for us, it is not going to fix everything in a short spell, this is a long-term project."
