It is understood the 68-year-old Irishman was climbing with friends on Carrauntoohill in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks when he slipped on a patch of ice and injured his ankle.
A team of volunteers from Kerry Mountain Rescue was dispatched to the scene and the man was airlifted by the Coastguard helicopter to Kerry General Hospital, where he is currently being treated.
