Macquarie Dictionary's editor, Sue Butler, said a furore over Ms Gillard branding conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott a misogynist in Parliament last week revealed that her dictionary's definition is decades out of date.
Ms Butler said the dictionary would broaden its definition from a hatred of women to include entrenched prejudice against women. The Macquarie Dictionary is an authority on Australian meanings of words.
Ms Gillard's fiery speech in which she berated Mr Abbott for allegedly sexist comments was lauded by feminists around the world.
But critics accused her of hyperbole, pointing to dictionary definitions of misogyny as pathological hatred of women and girls.
