Referendum Commission concerned about prospect of low voter turnout

The Referendum Commission has today raised concerns of a low voter turnout in the Children's Rights Referendum.

The Commission, which is launching its public information campaign today, believes there has not been enough media coverage.

The chairperson, Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan, is seeking an increase in the amount of time broadcasters give to highlighting the constitutional amendment vote on November 10.

"The Commissiion is concerned that the absence of very significant amounts of time in public debate beyween the Yes and No sides may mean that the level of awareness will be less than in other refererendum campaigns," she said.

"That's the concern - that people would not be aware and would not turn out to vote."
