Government short of target for cutting number of state agencies

Just over one third of the 48 state agencies earmarked for closure or merger will have completed the process by the end of the year.

A reduction in the number of "quangos" was a key commitment of Fine Gael's in the run up to the General Election and last November a list of 48 to be rationalised was published.

However figures obtained by the Irish Times show just 17 of those will be completed by the end of the year.

The figures show the Departments of Education and the Environment have best implemented their targets.
