Verdict of unlawful killing at inquest into Malawian woman's death

A jury at the Dublin City Coroner's Court has returned a verdict of unlawful killing at the inquest into the death of a Malawian woman who was strangled and dumped in a suitcase.

The remains of Rudo Maware were left in a holdall bag at St David's Terrace on Blackhorse Avenue last January.

The inquest heard the young student had left her Rathmines home to break up with her Zimbabwean boyfriend Jason Dubé, but never returned.

He took his own life four days later, leaving a suicide note confessing to murdering a woman in his flat.

Today's inquest heard how Rudo Maware was strangled, her head was covered with a plastic bag, and her body stuffed into a nylon travel bag, and dumped beside bins.

The jury was told CCTV footage shows Mr Dubé buying a black holdall bag on the day of the killing before fleeing to the UK.

Senior gardaí told the inquest their murder investigation was now closed, and there are no other potential suspects.

Outside court, the Honorary Consul for Malawi in Ireland Fr Patrick O'Malley said Rudo's family was devastated by her killing.

"It was a shattering experience for them," he said. "They have expressed their gratitude to me and to the people of Ireland for the support the family got."
