Suicide car bomb kills four schoolchildren in Iraq

Four schoolchildren have been killed by a suicide car bomb in Iraq, officials said today.

The device exploded near a primary school in the centre of the town of Hit, in Anbar province, shortly after a police patrol passed by, provincial spokesman Mohammed Fathi said.

He said six other children were injured in the blast 85 miles (140km) west of Baghdad.

The bombing came a day after the start of the new school year in Iraq.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq, but insurgents still carry out frequent attacks on civilians and security forces in an attempt to shake the trust in the Shiite-led government.
