Public report meteor-like object overnight

People across the country have reported seeing a large meteor-like object shooting across the sky last night.

Hundreds of people took to Twitter and Facebook to report the sightings, posting photos and video.

It was also seen across parts of Europe.

"Well, it was definitely a piece of space debris burning high up high in the atmosphere," said David Moore from Astronomy Ireland

"It has been seen in mainland Europe.

"We've had reports in from the south coast of Ireland, right the way across the island to the north coast, which means that it was very high up in the atmosphere, and therefor a very spectacular object, that probably has dropped fragments somewhere on Planet Earth.

"Whether it's on Irish soil or somewhere out to sea, we're not sure yet."
