More census figures published today show a 9.2% increase in the number of people getting married between 2006 and 2011.
The married population last year was over 1.7m - up from 1.5m in 2006.
There was also a significant jump in the divorce rate since 1996 when just 9,787 people were divorced.
Last year, that figure had risen to 87,770 - an 800% in 15 years.
The numbers remarrying also rose sharply from 6,641 in 1996 to 42,960 last year.
Overall, men were more likely to remarry than women - 39% of men compared with only 28% of women.
Men are also, on average, just over two years older than their wives or partner.
