Fine Gael backbenchers unhappy with lack of action on allowances

A number of Fine Gael backbenchers have expressed disquiet at the coalition's ditching of plans to cut public service allowances.

It follows Tuesday's announcement by the Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin that he would cut just one of more than 1,000 allowances examined.

A handful of backbenchers spoke up at last night's Parliamentary Party meeting on the issue.

The Labour Minister is now expected to be invited to attend the next meeting to address the Deputies' concerns.
