Irish Independent appoints new editor

Independent News & Media (Ireland) has appointed Stephen Rae (46) as its new editor. He replaces Gerry O'Regan (62) who has decided to retire after seven years in the editor's chair.

Mr O'Regan will write a weekly column and contribute other articles to the paper.

Stephen Rae will have full responsibility for the print and online editions of the newspaper, ensuring full integration of the print and online editorial teams.

He is the former editor of the Evening Herald (appointed in 2005), having previously served as its deputy editor, associate editor (news) and security correspondent. A native of Co Kerry, he is a graduate of the DIT School of Journalism and qualified as a barrister at King's Inns, Dublin. He is a former editor of the 'Garda Review'.
