Forthy-three-year-old Diane Ward of Harrisons Place, Charleville, Co Cork did not speak as the charges were read out.
Eight-year-old Anthony Ward was found dead at his home in Charleville on Monday morning.
Yesterday evening, at a special sitting of Limerick District Court, his mother Diane Ward was charged with his murder.
She has been remanded to the Dochas Centre in Dublin (the female wing of Mountjoy Prison) and will appear in court next week. The court ordered that she be examined by a forensic psychiatrist.
The court sitting heard she did not wish to be sent to the Central Mental Hospital as requested by the State.
Supt Patrick McCarthy told the court that Ms Ward had been seen by psychiatrist, Dr Eugene Cassidy, at CUH on Sep 3 and 4, who diagnosed severe affective disturbance. Dr Cassidy consulted with Dr Harry Kennedy of the Central Mental Hospital.
Supt McCarthy said that, as a result of that consultation, he was applying to have Ms Ward remanded to the Dóchas Centre, which would allow for her admission to the CMH, under the Criminal Law Insanity Act, 2006, where a bed was available.
Anthony will be buried today in Holy Cross cemetery after Mass of the Angels at Holy Cross Church in Charleville.
