Cork's Jack Lynch Tunnel upgrade to finish three months early

The upgrading of the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork is due to be completed by the end of November, three months earlier than planned.

The work involves making the tunnel more fire resistant to comply with an EU directive.

The project gets underway today, although motorists will not be affected until next Saturday, September 8.

From then onwards, the tunnel will close every night between 9.15pm and 7am with the exception of Fridays.

Spokesperson Nigel O'Mahony said more than 90% of drivers use the tunnel by day, and will not therefore be affected.

"90,000 people use the tunnel every day and most of that traffic is between the hours or 7am and 6pm," he said.
